Located in historic downtown Fernandina Beach, the Amelia Schoolhouse Inn is more than just a place to rest your head; it’s a journey through time, a celebration of history, and a place that makes going back to school something to look forward to. By blending the rich heritage of the old schoolhouse with the comforts of modern day living, this boutique hotel (part of the Southern Living Hotel collection) offers visitors a unique and unforgettable experience.
Our story begins in the late 1800s (1886 to be exact) when this large brick building was first erected by famed architect, Robert Sands Schuyler, who left his mark on many structures in the Amelia Island historic district. Known simply as “Schoolhouse No. 1”, this seat of learning played a pivotal role in shaping the island’s children and future from 1886 – 1930’s. Eager students with a quest for knowledge, passed through its doors leaving behind a lasting impression on the old brick walls.
Fast forward to the present day, where this stately building has been lovingly restored and transformed into the Amelia Schoolhouse Inn. The original windows, heart of pine floors, and brick were carefully preserved offering a unique blend of historic charm and modern luxury to all who visit. In addition to the interiors, the property also boasts a beautiful pool and a courtyard with a putting green for hours of Florida fun. The location is a convenient strolling distance to the downtown shops & eateries and only 1.5 miles from the beach.
meticulously restored interiors pay homage to the schoolhouse’s heritage with touches like vintage photos, globes, maps adorning the walls, and built-in desks in each room. These nods give credence to a time when “reading, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic” was the main focus in the halls of this building.
The guest rooms boast elegant, yet whimsical furnishings in bold colors, plush bedding, and all the amenities you’d expect from a top-notch hotel. Each room provides a cozy retreat with the charm of a bygone era.
With expertly crafted cocktails created by seasoned bartenders, this is one time you won’t mind being sent to the Principal’s office. Taking its name from the building’s educational roots, The Principal’s Office offers a completely different type of education—one in the art of mixology!
Whether you’re an expert cocktail connoisseur or simply looking to enjoy a refreshing drink, the Principal’s Office has something to please every palate. So, belly up to the bar and enjoy one of their many signature drinks. I hear The Principal’s Rita is worth going to the office for.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a traveler seeking a romantically charming escape, or simply someone who appreciates a well-preserved building, the Amelia Schoolhouse Inn is a must-visit on Amelia Island.
Even if you don’t stay at the hotel, you can still visit the Principal’s Office where you can raise a glass to history and education! Cheers!
