Amelia Island Museum of History

Step back in time and discover 4000 years of life on the water’s edge here on Amelia Island. From the Timucua Native American tribe to Spanish and French explorers, from the lawless spirit of pirates to the dignified air of Victorian-era residents, Amelia Island has been home to diverse cultures that have left an exciting heritage.

Housed in the former Nassau County Jail, we are the first spoken history museum in the state of Florida. We continue our story-telling tradition with a variety of tours that cater to many interests and age levels. Walking Tours and Docent-led Museum Tours are scheduled regularly. Alternate tour times may be arranged for groups of four or more by contacting our Director of Education.

Accessibility

The staff at AIMH aims to provide an accessible environment for all guests. Below is information that we hope will help you plan your visit. For any questions that may arise, do not hesitate to contact us at (904)261-7378.

  • The Museum is wheel-chair accessible. Most doorways measure 36” inches with the narrowest doorway measuring 27 inches.
  • A wheel-chair is available at no charge that will fit through all doorways.
  • All restrooms are ADA accessible and feature a changing table for infants and small children.
  • Sensory tips: You may bring your own fidget spinners, noise-canceling headphones or other items to help you have a more pleasant experience
  • One spot is designated for physically challenged guests. There is an ADA accessible ramp at the front entrance.
  • A guide for the hearing impaired may be found at the Greeter’s desk to allow you to follow along on the docent-led tours that occur at 11 am and 2 pm.
